How should you plan a monarch butterfly day and dinner in Monterey?

Start at the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary in the morning, end with fine dining in Monterey at Montrio. Western monarchs overwinter in Pacific Grove from mid-October to mid-February, and peak season runs from November through January. To see them clustered in the trees, visit before 11 AM or on an overcast day below 55°F. Then drive about 10 minutes to downtown Monterey for dinner at Montrio, the Michelin Guide 2026–selected restaurant at 414 Calle Principal. Order the Savory Corn Crème Brûlée, the Grilled Maitake Mushroom, and the Roasted Jidori Chicken.

When are the monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove?

According to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, monarchs typically arrive at the sanctuary in mid-October and leave in mid-February. The biggest numbers come between November and January. The sanctuary is at 250 Ridge Road in Pacific Grove. It's open sunrise to sunset every day, and both admission and parking are free.

Temperature decides what you'll see. Monterey Peninsula mornings in November sit near 50°F, and the butterflies hang in tight, still clusters until the air warms up. On a sunny afternoon above 55°F, with highs in the low to mid-60s°F, they lift off and fill the grove. Come early for the clusters, or come after lunch for the flight. If you're lucky, come twice.

How do you build a full monarch day around dinner?

  • Morning: the Monarch Sanctuary before 11 AM, while the clusters are tight.
  • Midday: a walk along the Pacific Grove shoreline, or a return trip to the grove to watch them fly.
  • 4:30 PM: happy hour at the Montrio bar, which runs until 6 PM daily.
  • Dinner: settle into the dining room of a restored 1910 firehouse, the first firehouse in California.

What should you order after a day outdoors?

Savory Corn Crème Brûlée with Duck Prosciutto.

Grilled Maitake Mushroom.

Roasted Jidori Chicken.

The Roasted Jidori Chicken. To drink, the Matcha Made in Heaven (banana-washed rum, matcha, Tempus Fugit banana, and lime) is as green as a eucalyptus grove. The Clarified Colada (house spiced rum, coconut, pineapple, and lime) tastes like the sunny afternoon you spent outside. For more favorites, see what to order at Montrio.

Why does a nature day end well at Montrio?

The kitchen cares about the same things the sanctuary does. Montrio is a certified green restaurant, ranked among the five greenest in Monterey. It buys produce locally and organically where possible, makes its stocks and sauces from scratch, and holds The Last Plastic Straw certification. Executive Chef Kurt Boucher's seasonal Californian menu follows what the region is producing, which is a big reason Montrio is regularly named among the best restaurants in Monterey.
